Flipping 101

Introduction

What is flipping? Flipping is the process of buying stock when its low in price and selling it for a higher price to turn a profit. For GW2Shinies, this generally means placing buy orders for listings and selling them high enough that you will have made money after the 15% trading post fees have been applied. The formula for doing this is profit = (sell order x .85) - buy order.

Cardinal Rules

  • Rule #1 - Do not gamble! This rule may seem obvious, however history has shown those with a desire to make money will often do so using any means. Sometimes that judgement is clouded by greed. Anything from opening bags to combining materials on the Mystic Forge is a gamble. We have a saying... "In gambling, the house always wins. If the house always wins, you always lose and losing is a poor investment."
  • Rule #2 - Patience is a virtue. Just because something is taking longer than usual to sell on the trading post, doesn't mean it's never going to sell. You should exercise a general rule of thumb in that all items will sell... eventually. Granted, there are exceptions to this thought process, but it holds true to the majority of items you sell on the trading post (assuming you did your homework and your prices are not astronomically higher than the current market accepted value).
  • Rule #3 - Do your research. Investing your hard-earned money should not be wasted due to ignorance on the markets you're pumping funds into. Always look at trading history to determine the nature of how quickly an item may be selling. For example, if you're looking for markets that will move your stock quickly, the items should not be flat-lining on the historical graphs. Trading history aside, demand is also important. It's much easier to sell your investments when more people actually want to buy it.
